Canmore is a wonderful town to raise a family. We all have our reasons for wanting to live in the stunning Canadian Rockies town of Canmore. Whether that’s because of the incredible views, the active lifestyle, the enjoyable pace of life, and the weekend getaway, there are many reasons to live in Canmore. There are some fantastic Canmore neighbourhoods to consider when it comes to families. We polled many of our Canmore contacts to gage their favourites and why they find Canmore a great town to raise children in. We explore the best neighbourhoods in Canmore for families.

A Helpful Guide For Best Family Neighbourhoods in Canmore:

1. Cougar Creek

Cougar creek is a great neighbourhood for families because of the proximity to Elizabeth Rummel School. Cougar Creek is an excellent area for young children. There are several parks and trails to enjoy as well. Simply driving into Cougar Creek, you can feel the family-friendliness it offers. Add in the fact that the north side of the valley provides long afternoons, which means that the little ones can play outside just a little longer than our friends on the south side of the Bow Valley. Not to mention that there are shops nearby, whether that be Canmore’s finest butch and deli, Valbella Gourmet Foods or one of the other local eateries.

There is an excellent mix of homes when it comes to real estate in Cougar Creek. The predominant property is a detached house, while there are some duplexes and condo apartments. Meaning there is an option for the new family or the family growing beyond their four walls. The first-time buyer family has a chance here in Cougar Creek. Most of the properties were built between the 1980s through to 2000s. We’re beginning to see larger extensions and new homes built as the Cougar Creek area matures.

2. Peaks Of Grassi

How exciting would it be for a child to grow up near a lake, make that more than one lake? Peaks of Grassi neighbourhood offers just that kind of access. It’s hard to beat Quarry Lake on a hot summer’s day here in Canmore. Enjoying a picnic with family and friends is a great week to spend the weekend! As with many neighbourhoods in Canmore, the trail system is fantastic. And for those families who feel pretty ambitious and would like to burn off some energy, they can hike Ha Ling peak or mountain bike at the Canmore Nordic Centre. If it’s winter, grab the cross country skis and head to the groomed trails down the street. World-class cross country ski trails await – keep your eyes open, and you may spot an Olympian!

The streets through Peaks of Grassi show what a wonderful family neighbourhood it is. You will find children playing road hockey and riding their bikes through the quiet, winding roads.

The houses are also more affordable than most other parts of town. The reason being is that there are property lots that are a little narrower, and half duplexes are common. Yes, there are larger detached homes as well. Peaks of Grassi offers a great spectrum of houses for each family’s needs.

3. Eagle Terrace

Eagle Terrace is close to Cougar Creek. In fact, there share a neighbourhood boundary. Eagle Terrace offers one road in and out of the neighbourhood, which keeps traffic to a minimum. Eagle Terrace Park is a fantastic meet-up spot for local families, and it also begins other families into the community to play. There is a little hill at the park that offers an excellent starter option for the little ones, so bring the magic carpet of GT Racer!

The type of real estate in Eagle Terrace is typically detached and townhouse. There is an excellent array of architecture. Peer into some backyards from the trails, and you will find trampolines and rock climbing walls which give you a sense of the number of families with children are in the neighbourhood.

4. Lions Park

Lions Park neighbourhood is an excellent spot for families, particularly families with middle school children and high school children, as both school options are within walking distance. Add into the mix that there is a soccer pitch and an outdoor hockey rink then you have year-round fun potential! Considering the easy access to downtown Canmore, this makes for a beautiful area that is very pedestal, in the sense that you can walk to all of your favourite shops. Unlike most of Canmore, you don’t need a car to reach the town centre.

The real estate options in Lions Park are primarily detached houses. The remaining bungalows are being converted into larger homes. In many cases, modern mountain architecture. You won’t find condo apartments here. It’s some of the most spacious real estate in Canmore. Some of the older real estate lots in Canmore are sub-divided and developed well before the recent housing boom.

Honourable Mentions:

Riverstone & Grotto Village

Riverstone & Grotto Village, despite being on either side of the valley, are two great entry-level areas for families buying real estate in Canmore. There is a higher density of homes in both neighbourhoods due to the narrower lots. Especially in the case of Grotto Village, the townhouses offer a good selection for more affordable housing in Canmore. There are daycares and dog walking options galore. These two neighbourhoods offer a great opportunity for first-time family buyers. The narrower lots provide a more affordable option in Canmore.
